Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, Verbal and Written Communication

Course Overview

Academic English is vastly different from one’s daily conversation English. Even if you speak English well in conversation, it might be difficult to understand the vocabulary and formal language structures used in high school, university or any other academic setting. The purpose of this course is to substantially improve the student’s English skills in the areas of grammar and punctuation, reading comprehension, technical report writing, extended essay writing, note taking and language composition. You will develop skills in academic proficiency and literacy in English. You will find it easier to understand and participate in your VCE or university course. If you complete the Academic English course successfully, you will be able to use English in a variety of academic contexts and take responsibility for your progress with little support from teachers.

This course conforms with other accredited English language programs. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally accepted test of English proficiency used by tertiary institutions and other organizations to measure spoken and written English to enter programs. The syllabus for this course is consistent with an accredited IELTS preparation program and will help prepare students for the skills and strategies necessary to achieve the score they require to pursue further studies. It focuses on all exam components; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are provided with detailed error analysis of their work and receive performance feedback.
